The Honda car brand has established a reputation to make reliable cars that can last a very long time without requiring a lot maintenance. The 2017 Honda Accord continues to maintain that reputation. According to JDPower, it has a 82/100 rating for quality and reliablity1. This 4-door midsize sedan has good performance and style, an efficient engine, a comfort interior, and maintains reliability for a long time period that helps it stay competitive with other car brands.
This 2017 Honda Accord car has new upgrades and features that make it different from previous generations Accords. This model year includes a new hybrid engine option that can get up to 49 miles per gallon. The infotainment center console is a touch screen display that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. New car safety technologies that are available include automatic braking that helps to slow down the car in case it gets too close to an object or lane-assist technology that keeps the car centered in the lane while it’s traveling down the highway.
The Accord exterior has a modern style, with a shiny chrome grill displaying a “H” symbol at the front of vehicle and sculpted waves running toward the rear of the vehicle. The front daytime LED lights allows the driver to see clearly during the day and night. There is enough space to sit 5 people inside this vehicle. Standard climate controls are included with two air vents for ventilation for the rear passengers.
Under the Hood: Performance and Efficiency
There are engine options available for the Accord, each with their own performance features. The base option is the 4-cylinder engine with 185 horsepower (hp) and automatic transmission. The higher performance engine option is a 6-cylinder V6 engine 278 hp with automatic or manual transmission. Finally, there is the hybrid engine option that is a 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor with 212 hp with automatic transmission.
The fuel economy for the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder engines can range from 24-30 mpg which is fine for a standard car. The hybrid engine with it’s 48 mpg fuel economy and can help reduce carbon emissions by being very fuel efficient which can help save drivers some money when filling up the gas tank and can be more environmental friendly.
There are car competitors that can be compared to the Accord in many categories. One example is the Toyota Corolla. It has similar fuel economy as the Accord with less horsepower. Another example is the Ford Fusion. It has engine options with more horsepower, more trunk space when comparing the hybrid models, and has an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option. The Accord can stay competitive with these cars in terms of price, performance, style, and safety features.
Inside the 2017 Honda Accord: Comfort and Connectivity
The interior of the 2017 Accord is good and spacious for seating 5 people. The higher trims have leather coverings which feel comfortable, but I do not think it’s real leather like on other higher-end luxury cars. The front seats can be adjusted for distance and how far you can lean back. The driver seat has additional features such as adjusting the lumbar support depth and adjusting the seat height.
The higher trims have two displays in the front of the car. The top display shows information like mpg, time, audio information, while the display below is touchscreen enabled and shows maps, car settings, and any Google Auto and Apple CarPlay features. There are two USB connections, one below the touchscreen and the other one is in the center box, where you can connect your phone. The car supports FM/AM radio and Sirius XM with a subscription.
There are many safety features for the Accord. The LaneWatch feature allows driver to see the blindspot on the right side when using the right turn signal. The Forward Collusion warning alerts the driver if they are about to collide with something ahead. The Lane-Assist feature will move the car back into the lane if the driver drifts away from the current lane. According to Cars.com, the 2017 Accord has a NHTSA crash test overall rating of 5 out of 5,2 which means the overall probability of injury risk to the passengers is much less than average.
Owner Experiences and Long-term Reliability
I am a real owner of the hybrid version of this car since 2016 and it’s a generally a good car. It drives well and handles the road well. The shift between the gas and electric engine is fine, but the gas engine can make loud a “drone” sounds when revving. I enjoy saving money when refilling the gas due to the more gas efficient engine. I also enjoy not needing to constantly have my foot on the pedal when driving on the highway because using the adaptive cruise control feature allows my foot to rest. I am satisfied when driving this car and I hope this testimonial will help other potential buyers when thinking about purchasing this car.
There are a few maintenance items like oil change and tire rotation that are needed to keep this car running smoothly, but most cars in generally require similar maintenance as well. There were two recalls, but the Honda dealership handled it well. I encountered issues with the front, LED daylights failing every couple of years and the center touchscreen console infotainment system was producing loud static noises that could not be stopped. The LED daylights were lifetime warranty and were easily replaced. The console infotainment system was replaced, but was expensive and had to call Honda constantly to get them to pay for part of the install and parts.
The 2017 Honda Accord has a pretty good resale value. Here are some 2024 national average purchasing prices for a used 2017 Honda Accord from KBB.com3:

- EX-L trim Sedan 4-door sedan sells for $16417.
- Touring trim 4-door Sedan sells for $18,486.
The 2017 Honda Accord has a market reputation of being an affordable car, that is safe and has a great long term reliability.
- It’s one of the best selling cars of all time, according to hotcars.com.4
- It was ranked one of the 10 best cars in 2017 by Car And Driver.com.5
In conclusion, the 2017 Honda Accord is good car to consider when buying a vehicle due to it’s competitive pricing, good value, updated style, good safety ratings, good reliability and it will last a long time. I continue to have a good driving experience with the Accord and will continue to own this car for as long as I can.

What a beautiful-looking specimen of a car. I love driving the Honda as it is so smooth on the open road. However, I haven’t tried the Hybrid variant. I love the interior and all the extras that the car offers. I don’t think we have the Hybrid Honda in South Africa yet and the limited hybrids that I have seen are all SUV-type vehicles.
This car looks brand new and I was amazed at the low prices. I would seriously consider buying one if the shipping costs to Africa weren’t so expensive.
Okay, thank you for the comments, Michel. It is a overall, good car. The interior and exterior do look nice.
Thanks.
Chris.
